For now, read on to see our insider’s guide to South Austin.
Every Austinite should have the full SoCo experience at least once! Tons of fantastic local shops, restaurants, food trucks and landmarks line this major Austin thoroughfare. Take a picture at the “i love you so much” mural beside Jo’s Coffee, stop by Allen’s Boots to become an official cowboy (or should we say cowperson), grab a snack at the food truck park off Elizabeth St, and satisfy your sweet tooth at Amy’s Ice Creams.
While not as highly trafficked as South Congress, South First Street is another hub of excellent restaurants, boutiques, and beautiful parks. Auditorium Shores, situated between South First and South Lamar, offers one of the best places in Austin to feel the grass beneath your feet and let the dog run around. Elizabeth St. Cafe is the perfect spot for lovers of Vietnamese fare and French pastries, while plenty of Tex-Mex staples can be found dotted along the sidewalks at places like El Mercado and Polvo’s. Don’t forget to take a picture in front of the Greetings From Austin mural before you leave.
South Lamar is all about good food and good entertainment. Catch a movie at the South Lamar Alamo Drafthouse, or have a karaoke night with friends at the Highball (with both in the same building, you could even do both in a single day!). Zach Theatre just south of the river is a great place to catch a play or concert, while further south there are plenty of restaurants for hungry Austinite. Uchi is one of the best places in town for sushi, while Odd Duck is the perfect date spot for Lunch, Dinner, or Sunday Brunch.
Another must-visit Austin park is Zilker Park, which sprawls out between South Lamar and Mopac. Take a swim in the famous Barton Springs Pool, or rent a kayak, canoe, or paddleboard and explore Lady Bird Lake. The Zilker Botanical Garden is absolutely breathtaking, especially in the spring, and there are tons of excellent spots for an afternoon picnic throughout Zilker Park.
Meanwhile, within walking distance of our Town Lake Austin apartments is the East Riverside neighborhood, with lots of fun places to eat, shop, and enjoy the outdoors. The Buzz Mill is the perfect spot for our more caffeinated residents and is located conveniently next to several excellent food trucks. Further west along Riverside, Pho Please and Mour Cafe and pantry are perfect spots for a casual brunch, lunch, or dinner. And if it’s exercise you’re after, the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail runs all along the river (including right behind our Riverside Austin apartments).
